Brief history of the music press and bauer media

1950s / 60s

Large uncritical of musicians' output- everything was always good

Content: mainly charts and singles, gig listings

Changes in society in the 1960s with the arrival of the Beatles and the rolling stones, drug culture of the 1960s - changed the nature of music and music writing





1960s
Rolling stone was created by Jann Wenner in the 1960s which contained a mixture of the current affairs, celebrity interviews and coverage of the music industry it was a fortnightly publication

1970s

Early 1970s- "glam rock"  Sweet, mud, slade, T rex

Late 1970s-
progressive rock
pink floyd, emerson lake palmer

Music papers still largely uncritical of groups until the prog rock bands begin to spend too much money on staging lighting and lasers


NME changed its style to meet punk head on

New writers were excreted from the magazines own readership with ads like wanted hip young reporters











Mid 1970s
NME embrases punk writers begin to move the paper away from music and towards political issues such as racism and drugs there comes a divide between musicians and magazines with political magazines such as NME

1978

Smash hits- launched a new glossy mag catering for a younger audience in a smaller magazine format
it focused on trivia favourite colour, food musicians

It included polls letters surveys fan club information keep in touch with the readership



Later 1970s- early 80s

Style in pop music becomes more important in content
Makeup, clothes, the video, fashion and hair

1980s
Indépendant music labels wanted their own voice and began producing fancies these were often typed, photocopied and distributed at concerts or by subscriptions

despite the handmade appearances this encouraged a whole new generation of writers photographers and cartoonists to contribute

1980s
New layout of magazines "style" had changed dramatically experimenting with different fonts and typefaces making the music press new and more exiting with breaking the rules




1990s
New technologies began to emerge music videos became popular which began to change the many ways music is consumed

Every single comes with a video sometimes more money is spent on the video than the single

launch of MTV became the first TV


1993- MOJO

Debuted in the form of a magazine on the news stands of Britain in 1993
Was initially published by emap but Bauer media took over in in 2008 and brought map in 2007

Today- is there a limited "music press" because everything is pop culture
Daily newspapers feature pop stars and celebrities appear on Daytime in Tv

People are famous for being famous everyone in a band or with someone taken assumes that they have a right to be rich and famous

Is the promotion of music today driven more by the industry or the audience/ readership?

Promotion today is driven by the industry as they have control over the audience and control what they want
Bauer media had a radio station based around that publication and mojo radio station opened in 2000 and closed to save bauer money on 5th November 2008

Bauer media is a diversified media group as you can access them in many different ways such as on the radio or online through there website the company helps to diversify by putting its media on many different platforms that are accessible by many different audiences. 


2. Bauer Media Group is a globalised company because?
How does Bauer Media gain such a huge profit? How does it globalise its products?
Bauer media is a globalised company because they operate in many different countries with many different media products an example of this is they are operating out of Germany with their magazine 'MOJO' operating out of the UK gaining them a profit as they can go towards the most successful markets and it will globalise its products by selling them in different languages in different countries making a larger profit as they have one magazine acting as many different magazines.
