Magazine ownership & NRS

The NRS The magazine industry is mostly owned by publishing companies, rather than the very large media conglomerates such as Disney, Amazon and Netflix that dominate film and television media worldwide. Most magazines are struggling in a competitive market so this media form (print) may be best managed by owners who specialise in the print medium. However , magazine publishing is globalised , like other media, with the most popular magazine brands (as measured by the National Readership Survey) in the hands of a few international companies . Paid-for magazines with a readership over 1 million in the UK, in order of readership : • What’s on TV - Time Inc - US magazine publisher • Radio Times - Hubert Burda Media - German magazine publisher • TV Choice - Bauer Media - German media conglomerate: magazines, radio and music television • Take a Break - Bauer Media • Good Housekeeping - Hearst Communications - US media conglomerate: newspap...

BAUER Media

Conglomerates like Bauer and Hearst Communications are still primarily print publishers with some associated television and radio. MOJO is published by Bauer Media . This company owns over 600 magazines, including two other UK music magazines – Q  and Kerrang ! The company has diversified the MOJO brand, offering mojo4music.com online in order to reduce the risk of only operating in one media form. The company is itself diversified, with ownership of magazines, websites, radio stations and music television channels, which may help protect it from declining audiences for magazines. Media industries and Media Audiances

MOJO Representations

How are artists represented 1)The artist in the first one, is shown to be a rebel who does not conform to his genre, this can be seen through his facial expression with him looking down showing his is down with the audience, him being just in front of the magazine shows that he doesn't need labels or magazines, he is just a normal human being just like the reader. His clothes show the unconformity to his genre he can be smart but also casual like everyone else 2) the artists are represented, as non conforming and different to everyone else, showing that they are not like the mainstreamed media wants them to be they are being themselves, doing what they want them being under the mojo sign shows they are under all the life of fame, just like you their expressions both show that they are serious about what they do.

mojo media language

What is the media language? Cover 1 Reflected and perfected: The codes and conventions of magazine covers for rock are a mid level shot with direct eye contact showing the artists as connected to the reader of the magazine. Along with this, the colour scheme of white yellow and pink showing the non-conformity to the genre of music. The mast head also allows us to see this when the ‘MOJO’ sign in half covered but still recognisable. The head covering the title shows they do not care about being in place and want to stand out and be different and out of place. This is seen through what he is wearing as well it is something colourful and does not conform to the genre of music showing the controversy that the sex pistols are surrounded by or trying to create. The choice of the elements used on the front cover is very excluding. With the magazine being of the rock genre it is not suprising that there are all males on the front cover, as the rock genre is mal...
