mojo media language

What is the media language?

Cover 1

Reflected and perfected:

The codes and conventions of magazine covers for rock are a mid level shot with direct eye contact showing the artists as connected to the reader of the magazine.

Along with this, the colour scheme of white yellow and pink showing the non-conformity to the genre of music. The mast head also allows us to see this when the ‘MOJO’ sign in half covered but still recognisable. The head covering the title shows they do not care about being in place and want to stand out and be different and out of place. This is seen through what he is wearing as well it is something colourful and does not conform to the genre of music showing the controversy that the sex pistols are surrounded by or trying to create.

The choice of the elements used on the front cover is very excluding. With the magazine being of the rock genre it is not suprising that there are all males on the front cover, as the rock genre is male dominated along with the time that these bands were popular in the 1960s society was very largely male dominated. ‘MOJO’ has a target audience of older males, which may be a reason as to why there are no females on the front cover.

The colour scheme also excludes the idea of something being above the ‘Sex pistols’ with the cover lines being in pink ad yellow very outstanding and rebellious colours and everyone else is in black and white. The back ground is also black and white showing you only need yourself and nothing to hide behind such as a colour full back ground taking the attention away they want all the attention on him in the center.

The language used in the front cover is very mature and informal using words such as ‘Bollocks’, which you would not find on a childs magazine or a business magazine.  This links to the genre because using those words are very rebellious and conform to the punk rock genre. This links to the target audience as ‘MOJO’ readers are older men who don’t like to conform and use more coloufull language.

There is a relationship between technology and media language on the cover. As on the spine of the magazine there is a link to the website for ‘MOJO’. There is also a CD on offer on the front of the magazine. This will increase the readership because they can acess the information on these bands on their phones giving a wider audience to the ‘Sex pistols’. Through the uses and gratifications theory by using the CD to bring people together or create a common intrest between them through consuming the technology on the ‘MOJO’ magazine.

Cover 2

the codes and conventions of the second magazine are very confirmative but in their own way putting their own spin on if for example the photo of all of the members of the band making direct eye contact is conformative but them being in pink with the phsycadelic rock colour scheme putting their own spin on it showing they are reinventing the old in their own way when u look at the cover the thing that stands out the most is the colours which show off and highlight the sub headings the artists being just under the title shows that they are together with the magazine making fans of the band want to pick up the magazine.
